The Saint Paul Lyceum – Philosophy Summer Camp

The Saint Paul Lyceum is a summer camp that introduces high school students to the thinking skills philosophers use to think about various questions. Students will also learn some basic logic and skills for testing arguments.

By exploring questions together, participants will learn how philosophy provides skills they can use to make their own decisions about important questions that they care about.

Philosophers search for well-reasoned answers to a variety of important or interesting questions, such as:

  • What’s right or wrong, and how can we tell? For instance: What counts as racist and what doesn’t? When is it wrong to use ideas or practices from other cultures? Should a religious bakery owner be protected from punishment for refusing to serve a same-sex couple? Is there anything morally wrong with colonizing Mars? Are we morally obligated to use a person’s preferred gender pronouns?
  • Are there any gods? Does the existence of intelligent life in the universe indicate there’s a God, or does all the seemingly pointless suffering in the world show that there isn’t one?
  • What’s a good human life? Is it one that’s pleasant and pleasurable, or is there something else that matters?
  • Is time travel even logically possible?
  • Do we have free will?
  • How can I tell when an argument is good or bad?

Tuition: $250.00. Scholarships are available for students who meet financial qualifications.

Dates: 6/17/2019 – 6/20/2019

Class Days: M, Tu, W, Th
