If you are a student or prospective student interested in an educational program that may lead to professional licensure or certificate, you should be aware of certain policies or information important for your success.
Saint Paul College programs that lead to a professional licensure or certification are intended to prepare a student for potential licensure or certification in Minnesota. While the Saint Paul College programs meet the relevant academic requirements for the licensure or certification board/agency in Minnesota, they may or may not meet the educational requirements for a licensure or certification in another state.
If you are planning to seek professional licensure or certification outside Minnesota it is important for you to know the specific requirements of the state in which you intend to apply for licensure or certification. If you are considering a program that leads to professional licensure or certification, it is important that you contact the Saint Paul College personnel with direct oversight of the academic program you are interested in for licensure and certification requirements. Click on the program name below to see the Professional Licensure Disclosure.
For these purposes, states include the District of Columbia and the US protectorates, as defined in 34 CFR §600.2. Saint Paul College makes every effort to ensure information about educational requirements for licensure or certification is current; however, state requirements may change. Separate from educational requirements, state licensure boards may require applicants to complete professional examinations, background checks, years of professional experience, jurisprudence exams, training, etc.
If you are planning to pursue professional licensure or certification in a state other than Minnesota, it is strongly recommended that you contact the appropriate licensing entity in that state to seek information and guidance regarding licensure or certification requirements before beginning an academic program.

California
Additional Information
There are currently 11 states with laboratory personnel licensure (California, Hawaii, Florida, New York, North Dakota, Tennessee, Louisiana, Nevada, West Virginia, Montana, Georgia). Puerto Rico also has licensure. The components of the law vary state-to-state, but usually includes an annual licensing fee (some are bi-annual), a provision for continuing education, a minimum education and professional competency requirements. For California: Must pass state examination; recognizes some national certification exams. However Certification does not equal licensure in California. In addition to passing the approved certification exam and the online quiz regarding California state law, the applicant must meet California education and training standards in order to be eligible for a California state license. The educational and training standards are described in the following link in sections1261 and 1263. https://www.ascls.org/advocacy-issues/licensure

Additional Information
Federal regulations require that these training programs consist of at least 75 hours of training, including at least 16 hours of supervised practical or clinical training. Minnesota requires this minimum. States that require the same training hours and practical/clinical hours we determined our programs met the requirements for licensure in those states. If a state required more our programs did not meet the requirements. Additional requirements such as state-specific examinations, background checks, fees, additional training, experience and coursework, etc. may apply. Nevada and New Mexico are missing the number of required practical/clinical hours so a determination cannot be made on whether our program meets the licensure requirements in these two states. https://phinational.org/advocacy/nurse-aide-training-requirements-state-2016/

Additional Information
There are currently no states or federal requirements that require personal trainers to be licensed or certified. However, most organizations hiring personal trainers will require them to hold a national certification from one of the following certification organizations: National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), or National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). These national certifying agencies are recognized across the United States. However, it is generally the hiring organization that will determine what certification they prefer. This program prepares students to take the NASM-CPT credentialing exam from the National Association of Sports Medicine.
