Once a high school dropout from a small rural Wisconsin town, Nick Gill is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the transformative power of education. Today, as a first-generation college student, he holds a 4.0 GPA and is an emerging business professional.

Nick began his journey working at a local grocery retailer, grappling with the demands of long hours and haunted by self-doubt. His future seemed uncertain until a supportive colleague saw the potential in him and suggested that he consider higher education.

Answering this call, Nick achieved his GED in 2020 and enrolled at Saint Paul College in the spring of 2022. Here, his trajectory took an upward swing. His composition class taught him essential skills, helping him communicate effectively—a talent he still applies in his studies and life. 

With an ADHD diagnosis and the college’s willingness to accommodate his needs, he is equipped with the ability to focus better and navigate his challenges. His flourishing self-confidence earned him a scholarship for his academic accomplishments, including an outstanding 4.0 GPA. 

Always fond of puzzles, Nick found Accounting and Business to be an intricate puzzle of concepts that helped him grasp the full picture of business functioning. He works full-time as a junior accountant at Vivacity Tech PBC and part-time at the East Saint Paul YMCA. He doesn’t stop at professional growth; he aims to make a difference in the community by volunteering at Friends & Company, where he provides companionship to senior citizens.

At Saint Paul College, Nick found his “educational dream home.” He embodies authenticity and lives empowered to achieve dreams he couldn’t have imagined as his younger self. His winning piece at a campus art contest reflects his creativity and respect for the indigenous land.

Nick’s story continues. After completing his Business Transfer Pathway A.S. Degree, he plans to pursue a B.S. degree in accounting at Metropolitan State University.
