This
summer, 37 students in Saint Paul College’s Power of YOU program will have the
chance to brush up on their math skills before starting classes this fall,
thanks to a generous grant from Xcel Energy. The Power of YOU students will
also engage in four hands-on workshops, to increase their understanding of STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related careers.
Students
enrolled in the Xcel Summer STEM Program will be enrolled in math courses, free
of charge, to work on the skills they need to start school in the fall. Generally,
students whose test scores indicate they are not ready for college math spend
one or two semesters enrolled in developmental coursework at full tuition rates.
During the Xcel Summer STEM Program, students will attend math classes three
days a week and taught by Saint Paul College mathematics faculty.
The
Xcel Energy is a strong supporter of STEM education. The Xcel Summer STEM
program integrates math, which is integral to STEM education, with monthly
hands-on STEM workshops. The courses offer students an innovative,
technology-assisted approach to individualized math education. Workshops
include a STEM career inventory that will allow students to find their ideal
STEM career, based on personal talents and interests; the Reality Check program
that integrates financial literacy into life planning; an introduction to STEM related
programs at Saint Paul College; and an arts based session where students will
create collages to help them imagine their own unique STEM future.
