Saint Paul College will celebrate Black History
month with two documentaries highlighting the history of Civil Rights in
America. The films will be presented in the Saint Paul College Theatre and will
be followed by moderated discussions. Attendance is free and open to the
public.
On February 10, 2014, at 1:30pm, we will present Slavery by Another Name, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book.
The film tells the stories of men, charged with crimes and often guilty of
nothing, who were bought, sold, abused, and subjected to deadly working conditions
as unpaid convict labor. Discussion following the film will be moderated by
Lynn Hudson, Associate Professor of History at Macalester College.
On February 24, 2014, at 1:30pm, we will present The Loving Story. This film tells the story of Mildred and Richard
Loving. This couple knew it was illegal for them get married in Virginia; after
marrying out of state, they were arrested for living together as husband and
wife. Discussion following this film will be moderated by Jane Rhodes,
Professor of American Studies at Macalester College.
Both of these films are offered as part of Created
Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle and are made possible through a
major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its
Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman
Institute of American History.
