Jasmine is a 3rd grader at Newport Elementary School who wants to grow up and become a Chef. Living in a community where multiple students will be the first generation to attend college, Jasmine has already expressed an interest in attending the
Saint Paul College Culinary Arts program to help her reach her dream occupation.
Newport Elementary School & Avid teachers Amy Kestner and Sara Bonine strongly believe in teaching 3rd-grade studentts the importance of pursuing their hopes and dreams. As such, these teachers ask students to write a letter to a college sharing their hopes and dreams, and this is what Jasmine was inspired to share with Jason Ross, our culinary instructor:
My name is Jasmine. I'm in 3rd at Newport Elementary School. We are an Avid School. We believe in our future. I wrote an essay about what I want to be when I grow up. I included it with this letter. When I grow up, I want to be a chef because I love cooking. I looked at your school online, it looked like the perfect place for me.
On Wednesdays, we wear college gear. I'd like to have gear from your college. Can you please send me something to wear? Anything would be awesome. I am excited to go to your school one day.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely, Jasmine
AVID is a college & career readiness program that serves various education levels. Their elementary program works with teachers to help them develop the academic habits needed to be successful in middle school, high school, and college in an age-appropriate and challenging way. Avid elementary students take structured notes and ask high-level questions beyond the routine. Their strong college-going culture encourages students to think about their college and careers, including covering their walls with college pennants and banners.
In response to this inquiry, Chef Jason Ross sent a personalized packet of Saint Paul College materials and a personal note encouraging Jasmine to continue dreaming of becoming a future Chef! This letter touched his heart as he shared, "It was very special to receive Jasmine’s letter, and I hope she enjoys the care package we sent her and will take up my offer to visit us at our special campus kitchen!"
