Crystal Barnes always knew she wanted to work in the medical field, but she was uncertain about whether she preferred direct client contact or a behind-the-scenes role. In 2012, she enrolled in a Public Health program but dropped out after one year, still unsure of her true direction. Over the next ten years, she held numerous temporary part-time jobs but never found her niche. Determined to reconnect with her passion for medical work, she enrolled in the Health Information Technology program in 2021.

After taking two years of online courses, Crystal graduated in the Summer of 2023. She then prepared for the State Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam and passed it in early 2024. Excited to start her new career, Crystal worked closely with SPC’s Career Services department to help with her resume writing, interview preparation, and connecting with local medical companies. In June, she landed her dream job as a Medical Coder in Cardiology with M Physicians. Crystal fully teleworks and enjoys the flexibility to work in the medical industry, behind the scenes.

As a Medical Coder, Crystal reviews doctor reports and summarizes diagnoses and conditions for accurate insurance submissions. She credits her SPC instructors for their dedication in helping her develop a rewarding career path. Crystal felt comfortable with the teaching and support services offered at a smaller school. She also found that her learning experience was enhanced through numerous live webinars with various professionals in the industry. Initially concerned about the potential impact of AI on her career, she now sees a bright future and recognizes the ongoing need for a human touch in coding health conditions accurately. Crystal loves her work and is excited about the opportunity to continue growing in her fulfilling career.

Beyond work, Crystal enjoys writing fiction stories and exploring nature in her spare time.
