Meet Our Business Planning Graduates

Kay Frandsen (Class 2009)

Kay Frandsen 2009

After being laid off in 2007, Kay was determined to run her own business. With a background in interior design and a penchant for finding bargains, she began visualizing a home furnishings consignment shop. The economy was taking a nose-dive and she needed to investigate the validity of her concept. Through the state’s Dislocated Worker Program, she was able to attend the Workforce Training & Continuing Education Business Planning class at Saint Paul College.

"The class sessions, viewed via the internet were accompanied by individual meetings with the instructor, Mr. Ransom Stafford. His extraordinary ability to explain a business plan motivated me to dig deep and do my research. Within a few months, each segment of my plan was thoroughly investigated and developed. The personal attention, support and direction I was given both stimulated and inspired me, but the plan I developed was what convinced me of the soundness on my intentions. My resolve to open a consignment shop was firm and with my 80-page business plan in hand, I secured an SBA loan within weeks. Consequently, when the owner of the space I wished to lease read my plan and realized I already had a loan, we came to a lease agreement within days. I opened my shop on September 1, 2009. If anyone asked me to give advice regarding opening a business, the first thing I would say is: ‘Write a business plan!'"
